WASHINGTON (May 31, 2017)—Multiple media outlets report that President Trump is close to a decision on the Paris Agreement and is leaning toward withdrawing from the accords. The President has said that a final decision will be coming in the next few days.

Following is a statement from Andrew Steer, President and CEO, World Resources Institute:

“President Trump appears to be heading toward a deeply misguided decision that would be bad for the world, but even worse for the United States.”

“President Trump should not turn his back on more than a 1,000 major companies and investors and 70 percent of Americans who want the U.S. to stay in the Agreement. Sadly, President Trump appears to be falling for 20th century economic thinking, when more efficient, cleaner 21st century opportunities are there for the taking. In withdrawing, he would relinquish U.S. leadership, moving away from a group of 195 countries and join a party of just three—the U.S., Nicaragua and Syria.

“For a self-proclaimed deal maker, President Trump should see that abandoning the Paris accords is a clear loser for the American people, business, and national security.”
